Sign / Symptoms
Description
  • Larvae burrow into the trunk and its base near the ground.
  • Surrounding tissues turn brown, decay, and hinder new root growth.
  • Trees and tendrils exhibit stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and undersized fruit bunches.
  • Infested trees are prone to falling due to weakened roots.
  • Suckers or young trees attacked by weevils often die.
  • Infestation spreads easily to neighboring tendrils in the same cluster.

Management And Control
  1. Remove and destroy infested parts during the early stages of infestation.
  2. Severely attacked trees should be cut down, with the root base dug up, chopped, and exposed to sunlight to kill larvae and cocoons.
  3. Keep the area clear of weeds to reduce secondary pest hosts and food sources.
  4. Chemical control:
    • Spray chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, or dimethoate as per label instructions, alternating between modes of action (IRAC).
    • Soak seedlings in deltamethrin or dimethoate solution if required.
