Description

Infestation begins at the fruit bud stage. Early attacks result in black spots on the fruit, while ripe fruit develops brown spots and starts to rot. The adult lays eggs beneath the skin of the fruit, and the hatched larvae burrow into the pulp, causing decay. The affected fruit eventually spoils and falls from the tree.

Management And Control

Cultural Control

Monitor the presence and population of fruit flies in the field. Collect and destroy all infested, damaged and fallen fruits. Wrap fruit with a paper sack or burlap to prevent fruit flies from laying eggs. Harvest as early as the fruit begins to ripen

Chemical control (un wrapped fruits):

 i.   Control by spot spraying with a mixture of insecticide and protein bait.

ii.  Use protein bait traps to trap adults and reduce fruit fly populations.

iii.  Use fruit fly traps containing a mixture of Methyl-eugenol and malathion or fipronil to monitor and mass trapping to reduce the population.

iv.  Apply insecticide when the fruits begins to mature according to the rate recommended on the label
